My next surprise came when I was working in Cambridge. I was on stage doing my bit and happened to notice over at the bar John Gorman from the group The Scaffold, who’d not long before had a massive hit with ‘Lily the Pink’.

I thought he was there having a pint at his local club, but the reason for John calling in wasn’t for a drink at all. He was there to ask if I would write an album for the television show Tiswas.

I accepted immediately, because at that time the most talked about show on television was Tiswas on a Saturday morning, and I was their biggest fan.

The ratings were huge, and stars from all over the country were queuing up to appear on the program starring Chris Tarrant, Sally James, Lenny Henry, Bob Carolgees with Spit the dog, and of course John Gorman.
